was a regular customer at our restaurant. He
had spoken with me about our
merchant account several times. Our
existing contract was coming up for renewal so
I asked what makes him different from everyone
else. I learned more about merchant services
in the next 10 minutes than in the previous 7 years
my business had been opened. He
suggested that we accept American
Express cards to increase our customer base.
I was reluctant because the discount rates are higher
than Visa and MasterCard. He pointed out that
my restaurant was in the middle of a lot of
office complexes and most executives
carry American Express cards. I took Jim at his
word and the first month I accepted over $10,000 in
American Express charges from our expanding
daily lunch crowd. I had
to hire additional staff to handle the

pin pad to accept Debit cards and started accepting
